ONE TIME CLASSES AND GROUP WORKSHOPS
STUDIO TOURS AND WORKSHOPS Take a guided tour of the Firestick Studio with one of our staff members and explore the workings of a studio and the craft of making pottery. You'll likely see potters throwing on the wheel, kilns being loaded, and beautiful works in the gallery. Tours are always free. If you would like to schedule a date for a "Play with Clay" workshop experience, you can make up to 5 pieces on the potters wheel. Group size is limited to 8 people. Cost for a 2 hr. workshop is $55 per person, which includes all tools and materials. If you want one of the potters to "finish" your pieces which includes trimming, bisque fire, glazing and high firing each pot, the cost is $15 per piece and takes about 3 weeks. Or, you have the option to come back and glaze your own pottery after it has been bisque fired, which is usually in about a week. Or we can hold your pieces up to 3 months to allow more time for you to return to glaze your own pieces. When your pieces come out of the glaze kiln and are ready for pick up, we will call to let you know, or we can box and ship them to your mailing address. Call 805 272-8760 to reserve workshop space. HAND BUILDING CLASSES
2 hour Hand building clay workshops are available for private groups or individuals by scheduling a reservation. It's a great team building event or special way to celebrate by being creative together! Or you can sign up for a weekly 4 or 10 week hand building class for a more in-depth learning experience. Space is limited, so make your reservations today! |
Public review - Daniel
“This experience was so great. My wife and I had a great time and it was really fun. We both had never done anything like this before but the instruction was clear and we were able to create nice pottery.” Public Review - Cecilia I absolutely recommend everything about this experience! It's perfect for those who are just looking to quickly dabble into pottery without getting too involved. The location is magical and surrounded by such a unique town. Robin and all the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable too! I will definitely be taking a full class with them in the future. |
- HOW THE 2 HOUR "PLAY WITH CLAY" WORKSHOPS WORK:
We offer workshops daily, 11-1pm on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, 12:30-2:30 on Wednesday, 2-4pm Thursday and Friday, plus 2 workshops on Saturday 2-4pm and 4-6pm. Price is $55 per person. Maximum class size is 8 people.
Please call for reservations at least a day in advance, (but keep in mind that we often fill up early on weekends.) Also, be sure to wear comfy clothes and shoes. We provide aprons. You'll get a little dirty but the clay will wash right out.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARRIVE: THE TOUR
When you arrive we give a guided tour of the studio. We'll show you examples in the gallery of different kids of pottery, colors and surface decoration, an opportunity to watch resident potters at work, and a close look at the kilns and glazing area.
We want everyone to know that your pieces won’t be fired on the day you make them. We are a genuine, high-fire reduction studio. This means that, if you decide you want to save your work, they will need to be trimmed by one of our potters and your name applied on each piece, then bisque fired, then glazed and high-fired. The entire process takes about 3 weeks. Guests may choose either to sign up for another workshop to glaze their own pieces OR pay one of our potters to do this. You pick the glaze colors…the price is $15, per each piece.
LEARNING TO “THROW”
After “the tour” you will don an apron, grab a towel and take a seat at a potters wheel. Your teacher will do a 10-minute demonstration, pass out clay and everyone will begin to "throw" clay on the wheel. We provide enough clay for each participant to make up to 5 pieces; you decide what you want to make. Your teacher will work with you, hands on, to insure that you come away with a few nice pieces.
Afterward, you will decide what you want to keep, and whether you’re able to come back to glaze your pots. We can hold pieces for you up to 3 months. If you are unable to come back to glaze your pottery within 3 months, you can choose to have one of our potters glaze your pieces for you. FIRESTICK is well-known for it's beautiful selection of cone 10 glazes.
